Guide to Image Cutout and Catalog Search
Services for the FIRST and MAGPIS Surveys

Since 1994 the FIRST survey has provided image cutout services that provide quick access to radio images of the sky. In 2005 we added images from our radio survey of the Galactic plane, MAGPIS. Over the decades since we incorporated imaging data from many other Galactic plane surveys to enable easy access to multi-wavelength imaging of the Milky Way. We also have data products for the high-resolution 1.4 GHz VLA survey of SDSS Stripe 82 from Hodge et al. 2011 and Hodge et al. 2013.

This page provides an overview of all our imaging surveys.

The MAGPIS survey is a 1.4 GHz Multi-configuration (B,C,D) VLA images; see the GPS home page for information on other surveys including Spitzer near IR, far IR, millimeter, and 6 cm to 90 cm radio observations. The color cutouts interface can combine multi-wavelength observations to make color images.

Wide-band JVLA 1-2 GHz observations taken in the SDSS3 southern Galactic cap:
20.5h < RA < 4h, -9° < Dec < 15°
Data acquired after the VLA upgrade to complete coverage of the SDSS southern region. This data was used in the FIRST survey (Helfand, White & Becker 2015), but the cutout service splits the observations into two bandpasses and also shows polarization images for the bandpasses. The sky coverage is spotty since only regions not previously covered by FIRST were observed.

VLA 4.86 GHz observations covering NOAO DWFS region:
2h03m15s < RA < 2h16m45s, -5°38' < Dec < -3°33'
VLA 6 cm D-configuration observations of the southern (Cetus) region of the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey. The cutouts page also shows FIRST survey cutouts for comparison. The color cutouts page combines these 6 cm and FIRST 20 cm data to make a color image.

Acknowledgments: For more than 25 years, the FIRST and MAGPIS image cutout services were hosted by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics (LLNL IGPP). Those data and services were migrated to this server in September 2025. We are grateful for the years of support for the IGPP servers, and especially offer our thanks to Jim Sharp for his dedicated and highly skilled support.
